Introduction To Perms

Deciding on a new hairstyle can be daunting — Don’t panic! The Hair Master is here to help. Sit back, relax, and let me help you figure out the perfect perm for your hair.
Is a Perm the right choice for you?
When you’re considering perming your hair, here are a few things you should consider:
- Have you dyed your hair multiple times, or bleached and then dyed it?
- Do you love to swim as a sport? Is swimming part of your gym routine?
- Do you need to wash your hair frequently?
If you answered yes to the questions above, a perm may not be the right choice for you. Your hairstyle should always fit in with your lifestyle!
Perm Styles
There’s more to a perm than the technique used to form the curls. Perm techniques, in particular, can create a variety of styles for you to choose from based on your face shape and your hair’s thickness and natural curl, and may even help you cover up problem areas!
Body Wave Perm
This style still looks natural while still appearing neat and increasing the volume of your hair.
Body wave perms are best for either very straight hair, creating more volume, or to help then more fly away curl to bond together more effectively. It works best on longer hair.
If you’ve looked in the mirror and thought your hair looked limp, a body wave perm will bring your hair back to life by creating some bounce and natural movement.
Spiral Perm
Spiral perms are designed to produce springy, bouncy curls that pop back into place when you pull and release.
That means that the spiral perm can achieve anything from the tightest of corkscrew curls to loose sausage curls.
Ladies who already have very curly hair do well with these perms, and people going for a bit of a retro look. A spiral perm is best on hair that is at least eight inches long.
Root Perm
Root perms can be used for people with finer type hair, who would like a bit of lift at their roots in order to add volume — with or without natural curls of their own.
In fact, women with very straight shiny hair love root perms because they provide a touch of a lift at the scalp, just enough so that hair feels more free-moving instead of glued down!
Straight Perm/Chemical Straightening
Hair treated this way can stay straight for a very long time, even if you do have a natural wave or curls, though you will have to re visit the process as your hair grows out, just as with any perm.
It’s a common myth that Straightening Perms make your hair grow. This is just due to how much longer hair looks once it’s straightened!
You won’t get longer hair with a straight perm, but you will get incredibly glossy, low-maintenance locks if you’re done with your curls and waves for a while and want to change things up!
Sets
Introduction to Setting Hair Setting is still an ideal technique for creating smooth, sleek hairstyles that is are still in demand today.
Setting can produce a formal look but can also give your style a natural finish…. there’s a set to suit everyone’s needs!
In today’s fast paced environment, setting can be performed by using a number of different techniques to create the desired effect, these include; winding the hair around rollers & using blow drying techniques on the hair.
There are many different ways to set hair and a huge variety of tools you can use to do it.
There are three main types of setting:
- Roller setting
- Pin curl setting
- Heated roller setting
Roller Set
Roller Set is a type of hair styling method that is sometimes called a wet set. It involves putting hair rollers into the hair while it is wet. …
With a wet set, however, the styling begins after the hair is washed and before any drying occurs.
Hair care products such as gel or setting lotion are commonly applied to add longevity to the finished appearance.

Pin Curl Setting
Pin Curl Setting involves setting without the aid of a roller.
The pin curl set gives great curl results and the hair dries much faster than when it is tightly wrapped around a roller.
Using pin curls to set dry hair after a round brush blow-dry provides longevity and hold to the styled hair. These curls are created by a wet setting technique.
The section patterns and winding techniques can be the same as for winding with a roller, and the hair is wound from point to root.
Heated Roller/Rod Set
Heated Roller/Rod Set is designed to be heated before it rolls into the hair.
This can be completed using many methods – Heated rollers, Velcro rollers, Electrical Wands.
Alternatively, a hair dryer heats the hair after the rolls are in place.
Hair spray can temporarily fix curled hair in place.
